Navigating Queerness: Embracing Identity, Community, and Growth
Navigating queerness: Embracing Identity, Community, and Growth
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, being queer is more than an identity; it is a journey. It is a process of discovering who we are, learning how to navigate a world that may not always understand us, and finding ways to live authentically despite challenges. While every queer person’s story is unique, there are common themes that connect many of our experiences: self-discovery, resilience, belonging, healing, and pride.
At In-Focus: Relational Therapy, we recognize that every queer person’s journey is unique. While no two stories are the same, many LGBTQ+ individuals share common experiences of self-exploration, coming out, seeking belonging, healing from adversity, and learning to embrace who they are with pride. These shared experiences inspired the creation of The Lavender Circle, a support group designed to provide a safe, affirming, and inclusive space for members of the LGBTQ+ community in Tallahassee and the surrounding area.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
Many queer individuals spend years exploring and understanding their identities. Some people know from a young age that they are queer, while others discover this part of themselves later in life. Regardless of when that realization occurs, the process often involves questioning, learning, and growing. Self-discovery can bring excitement, relief, confusion, or joy, or sometimes all at the same time. It is important to remember that there is no “right way” to be queer. Your journey belongs to you, and your identity is valid exactly as it is.
One of the most powerful experiences a person can have is feeling truly seen and accepted. In spaces where authenticity is welcomed, individuals can begin to explore their identities without fear of judgement or pressure to first into someone else’s expectations.
Finding Authenticity
One of the most powerful aspects of the queer experience is learning to live authentically, which means showing up as your true self rather than hiding parts of yourself to meet the expectations of others. For many queer people, authenticity can feel liberating. It allows us to build relationships based on honesty, develop confidence in ourselves, and create lives that align with our values. At the same time, authenticity can be challenging when faced with rejection, discrimination, or misunderstanding. Living authentically is not always a destination, it is an ongoing practice of choosing ourselves again and again. This commitment to authenticity is one of the guiding values of The Lavender Circle. We believe everyone deserves a space where they can show up as their whole self and be met with respect, curiosity, and affirmation.
The Importance of Community
Historically, LGBTQ+ communities have served as sources of strength, resilience, and connection. Whether through chosen family, friendships, advocacy groups, or support networks, community reminds us that we are not alone in our experiences. Many queer people create “chosen families,” networks of individuals who offer love, acceptance, and support. These relationships can be especially meaningful for those who have experienced rejection or lack of understanding from family members or others. Community helps us celebrate our successes, navigate challenges, and recognize the strength that comes from shared experiences.
For many people, finding community can be life changing by providing opportunities to share stories, learn from others, celebrate successes, and receive support during difficult times. The Lavender Circle was created with this purpose in mind. Hosted by In-Focus: Relational Therapy, the group offers participants an opportunity to connect with others who understand the complexities of the queer experience. Through discussion, reflection, and shared learning, members can explore what it means to live authentically while building meaningful connections with others.
Exploring the Many Dimensions of Queer Identity
Being queer impacts many aspects of our lives, including our relationships, family experiences, cultural identities, mental health, spirituality, and personal growth. Throughout history, LGBTQ+ communities have found ways to honor these dimensions through storytelling, activism, art, and symbols such as the Pride flag. One of the themes explored with The Lavender Circle is the meaning behind the colors of the Pride flag and how they connect to our lived experiences:
A picture of people holding the rainbow pride flag
Red (Life): Honoring our stories and experiences.
Orange (Healing): Exploring growth, resilience, and recovery from hardship.
Yellow (Sunlight): Finding joy, hope, and happiness.
Green (Nature): Connecting with ourselves, others, and the world around us.
Blue (Harmony): Cultivating peace, balance, and meaningful relationships.
Purple (Spirit): Embracing authenticity, purpose, and self-acceptance.
These themes invite participants to reflect on their own journeys while recognizing the diverse experiences that exist within the LGBTQ+ community.
Healing from Hurt and Trauma
Unfortunately, many queer individuals experience discrimination, bullying, rejection, or other forms of minority stress. These experiences can impact mental health and emotional well-being. Healing begins when we acknowledge our experiences and allow ourselves space to process them. Therapy, support groups, trusted relationships, creative expression, advocacy, and self-care can all play important roles in healing. Healing does not mean forgetting what happened. Rather, it means learning how to move forward while honoring our experiences and recognizing our resilience. The Lavender Circle seeks to foster this kind of healing environment by encouraging compassion, mutual support, and genuine connection among participants.
